COLUMBIA, SC (September 4, 2013) – The son of a longtime Palmetto Cash 5 player bested his dad by winning the game’s $500,000 top prize.
The Spartanburg man is the Lottery’s first $500,000 Palmetto Cash 5 winner this year, having overcome odds of 1 in more than 8 million.
The winner says he doesn’t play the Lottery often, but bought the ticket because that’s what his dad would have done.
His father, a faithful lottery player, says he’s not disappointed it wasn’t his time to win.
“I’m just glad to know that someone does,” he said.
The winning ticket, a quick pick (1, 2, 16, 19, and 36), was purchased from the Piedmont Petro Corner Mart #42 on the Chesnee Hwy. in Spartanburg for the August 26 drawing.
The winner shared the moment with his dad, giving him the ticket to keep until they were both free to come to Columbia to cash it in.
“I’m going to the bank and then home,” said the winner.
Spending the extra $1 for Power-Up, multiplied the $100,000 prize to $500,000 when a “five” was drawn.
For selling the claimed ticket, Piedmont Petro Corner Mart #42 in Spartanburg received a commission of $5,000.
To date, lottery play has resulted in more than $3.1 billion transferred to support education.
