|Larger-than-life Jackpots Exciting for S.C. Players and Advantageous for Education

COLUMBIA, SC (September 17, 2013) – Wednesday night's Powerball® drawing with an advertised jackpot of $400 million ranks as the fourth largest in game history, and has many wondering if supersized jackpots are the new norm.
This jackpot is the fourth in a string of eye-popping jackpots achieved within the last 12 months. Powerball® posted a $448 million jackpot in August, a $590 million jackpot in May, and in November of last year the jackpot swelled to $587 million.
While it's impossible to predict when the next big jackpot will surface, changes made to the Powerball® game in 2012 are credited with delivering as advertised bigger jackpots and more millionaires. The response from South Carolina players has been overwhelmingly positive.
In South Carolina there's been a drastic increase in the number of millionaires since the adjustments were made. Since January 2012, Powerball® has created16 millionaires in our state, up from three millionaires the year before.
Eight of these winners won $2 million by purchasing PowerPlay® for an additional $1and matching all five white ball numbers. The others won $1 million without adding PowerPlay®.
The most recent millionaire making opportunity was on Saturday when the numbers on a Powerball® ticket purchased from a Publix in Columbia were drawn making the ticket worth $1 million.
Education has won as well.
Big jackpot runs like the one tomorrow night mean an additional $3 to $5 million in funding for education in South Carolina.
South Carolinians looking to take a chance on the $400 million jackpot with a cash payout of $223 million, must purchase $2 Powerball® tickets by 9:59 p.m. for Wednesday's 10:59 p.m. drawing.
The odds of winning the jackpot are long, about 1 in 176 million. The Lottery urges everyone to please play responsibly.
