SC’s Powerball® Jackpot Winner Surfaces
9/23/2013 4:35:24 PM

COLUMBIA, SC (September 23, 2013) – The winner of South Carolina’s nearly $400 million Powerball® jackpot has come forward. The winning ticket was presented to the South Carolina Education Lottery Monday afternoon by a Columbia area resident who declined to be identified.

In a conversation, the winner shared that this was only the second time he’s played the Lottery. He was home alone on Thursday when he checked his Powerball® ticket and turned around and around in his kitchen telling only his little dog that he had won. He went on to say he stopped for gas at the Murphy Express the day of the drawing when his wife called and told him to pick up hot dog buns. He went inside the store, saw the advertised Powerball® jackpot, and bought $20 worth of tickets, however Murphy does not sell hot dog buns.

This news comes four days after it was announced the Murphy Express on Augusta Rd. in Lexington sold the winning ticket for Powerball’s® fourth largest jackpot. Murphy Express will receive a $50,000 bonus now that the prize has been claimed.

For the state of South Carolina this win means an additional $15 million in tax revenue. For education, this jackpot run will allow the Lottery to transfer up to an additional $2 million in support of education.

While the jackpot gets the most attention, 40,000 Powerball® tickets purchased in South Carolina won a prize from $4 up to the jackpot. A $1 million Powerball® ticket sold at the Tiger Express on Elm St. in Hampton for the drawing on Wednesday, September 18 remains unclaimed.

This is South Carolina’s 7th Powerball® jackpot win and its largest at $399.4 million. South Carolina has yet to celebrate a Mega Millions® jackpot win, but that could change tomorrow night as attention shifts to its $160 million jackpot.
