Trip to the Store for Milk Results in $2 Million Powerball® Win

COLUMBIA, SC (May 26, 2022) – A trip to the grocery store for milk resulted in a Chester man winning $2 million.

“I ran out of milk, and I needed it for my morning coffee,” the winner told South Carolina Education Lottery officials.

He says he was on his way out of the Food Lion store on the JA Cochran Bypass when he looked over at the customer service counter and decided to get a Powerball® ticket too.

The next day he checked his ticket and realized he was a millionaire, times two.

“I freaked out,” he said.

His ticket, a quick pick, matched the first five numbers drawn but missed the Powerball® number in the drawing on May 14 (6 - 40 - 41 - 45 - 52 and Powerball® 9). Because he purchased PowerPlay® for an additional $1, his $1 million prize doubled to $2 million.

“It’s a large amount,” he admitted after cashing in the big win. “I’m excited.”

The odds of winning $2 million are 1 in 11,688,054.

For selling the claimed ticket, Food Lion #2804 in Chester received a commission of $20,000.

The estimated Powerball® jackpot for Saturday night’s drawing is $150 million.
