COLUMBIA, SC (September 18, 2015) – For many the Lottery is more than a game, it’s a ticket to an education. And a new series of commercials the South Carolina Education Lottery began airing this week tell this story like none before.

Real South Carolinians, not actors, star in the three, 60-second commercials. Few words are spoken in the ads that take viewers on a visual journey profiling the life experiences of three individuals touched by lottery scholarships—a University of South Carolina student, the grandmother of a Midlands Technical College graduate, and a cancer researcher and graduate of Clemson University.

The commercials close with the tagline, “The impact of an education is beyond words.”

Leslie Bruce, a geology student and LIFE scholarship recipient at the University of South Carolina, along with her professor Dr. David Barbeau invited the Lottery to chronicle their travels to a dig site in Utah. Through Bruce’s eyes we feel the excitement of packing your bags, hiking trails and excavating in the desert before coming home to graduation. Today Bruce is studying for her master’s in geology.

In another ad, we watch as Barbara Wallace opens the screen door for her granddaughter, Tameeka, who has just learned of her acceptance to Midlands Technical College. The story line follows the grandmother as she watches Tameeka’s progression through school and culminates with an emotional scene where Tameeka takes off her graduation cap and places it atop her grandmother’s head.

Stephen Shuford’s story is a poignant, personal one. After graduating from Clemson University with the help of a lottery scholarship, Shuford takes a job with KIYATEC, a cancer research firm in Greenville that works with Greenville Health System. Shuford is identified in the ad as a Cancer “scientist,” but that word disappears and is replaced with cancer “survivor.”

To date, over 1.4 million lottery-funded scholarships have been awarded to South Carolina’s students.
