COLUMBIA, SC (July 22, 2014) – A Taylors couple will eventually tell family and friends they won $1 million in the Lottery, but for now they’re keeping a tight lid on it.
“The money won’t change us or how we live,” the wife said.
On Friday, her husband showed her an article he cut out of the newspaper about a $1 million Powerball® ticket sold in town. Then he handed her his ticket.
“We won the Lottery,” he said.
She didn’t believe him for a second.
He’s buys a Powerball® and Mega Millions® ticket every week with nothing to show for it that is until the drawing on Wednesday, July 16. He matched the first five white ball numbers drawn – 5, 15, 18, 26 and 32 – to win $1 million. Had the red Powerball® number of 35 matched, the jackpot would have been his.
“I might have cried,” he confessed when he realized he was the subject of the news article.
The couple’s had fun thinking of things they could buy with the winnings and how they’ll tell their children.
And they aren’t wasting any time enjoying the money.
“We’re having lunch at McDonalds,” the husband said.
“We might splurge and try something that’s not on the dollar menu,” laughed the wife.
Garden Spot 4 in Taylors received a commission of $10,000 for selling the claimed ticket.
The odds of winning $1 million are 1 in 5,153,633.
Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than one million college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $3.4 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
