Georgia Lottery Player Lucky in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, SC (January 10, 2012) – Accustomed to checking and throwing away non-winning Powerball® tickets, an Atlanta, GA, man wasn’t sure what to do with one he purchased in Salem, SC, that matched five numbers.

He thought it best to preserve the evidence. He scanned the Powerball® ticket for the December 31, 2011 drawing (5, 23, 25, 28, and 40 PB: 34 PP: 4) into his computer and saved a copy in three locations. Then he read up on how to collect his $200,000 winnings.

“I was one number away from the jackpot,” he said when he arrived at the South Carolina Education Lottery Claims Center. “One more digit and I would have gone stark raving mad.”

Had he purchased PowerPlay® for an extra $1, his winnings would have been an automatic $1 million, no matter what PowerPlay® multiplier was drawn.

The odds of winning $200,000 playing Powerball® are 1 in 5,138,133.

Lowry Food Mart #1 in Salem received a commission of $2,000 for selling the claimed ticket.

Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than one million college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $2.6 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
