FOURTH SCEL PLAYER TO WIN BIG OFF FORTUNE COOKIE N

Columbia, SC (April 1, 2005): One Charleston woman has hung-up her B-I-N-G-O shoes for retirement - literally. The Charleston woman is one of 14 South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) players to match five of six numbers with Powerball® on Wednesday, March 30. She is also one of many nationwide that choose their numbers via a fortune cookie.

“I told my manager to ‘take this job and shove it,’” the 63-year-old woman said jokingly. “Then I told him, ‘I won $500,000 with the lottery and I quit.’” The winner was a part-time employee at a local bingo hall. She has requested the Lottery not release her name.

Last week, the winner and her daughter were eating at a local Chinese restaurant when they noticed the numbers behind their fortune.

“I usually play my special numbers - my birthday and two other numbers that are lucky to me,” said the woman. “This time I decided to play the fortune cookie numbers because my daughter asked me to.”

The winner usually plays her special numbers at the same store on SCEL’s Palmetto Cash 5 game each week. On this occasion, she missed the cut-off time because she had to take her husband to the hospital. So she played the number on Powerball® and it paid off.

Of the 14 SCEL match five winners, eight chose the PowerPlay® option, which multiplies non-jackpot winnings up to five times. The PowerPlay® number was 5, meaning those players won $500,000.

The Charleston woman is the one of four SCEL players to come forward to say they played their numbers based on a fortune cookie. Nationwide, 10 lottery players have come forward with the same story.
