Columbia, SC: Melvin and Phyllis Isbell, of Greenville, traveled to Columbia today to claim their Powerball® winnings.
“I happened to see the numbers around 11 o’clock,” said Mr. Isbell. “ I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”
Mrs. Isbell added, “I was watching television, and he came through the door with the strangest look on his face and a piece of paper in his hand. Then he said, ‘I need you to check a few numbers with me. I think I won the lottery,’” said Mr. Isbell.
“I didn’t know what to think,” said Mr. Isbell. “I thought I won $200,000.”
Each ticket is worth $667,142 cash. Holders of the winning tickets will each receive $200,000, plus an additional $467,142 from the second-ever Match 5 Bonus Prize Pool for total winnings of $667,142.
The Match 5 Bonus Prize, a feature added to Powerball® in 2002, was activated for the first time Wednesday night. When the Powerball® jackpot surpassed the record jackpot level, previously $340 million, the new bonus feature limited the jackpot growth to no more than $25 million per draw. The portion of sales that normally would have been added to the jackpot amount above $365 million was moved to the new Bonus Prize Pool to be equally divided among the Match 5 prize winners when the jackpot was hit.
“I just, I just, I’m looking at that check and it’s hitting home right now,” said Mrs. Isbell.
The Isbell’s purchased their ticket at the Hot Spot located at 3908 Calhoun Memorial Highway in Easley. They plan to travel, save some money, and buy a new car.
“I want a new 2006 Mitsubishi like the one on TV,” said Mrs. Isbell.
A man from Kings Mountain, North Carolina, also claimed his $667,142 Powerball® winnings. He wishes to remain anonymous.
“I started looking through the tickets I had and said ‘Oh my God,’” said the man. “They scanned the ticket and it said see the claim office. The manager told him we’re looking for a $600,000 winner. So we said we’ve got to go.”
The Kings Mountain man says he’ll always buy his ticket at the Wilco Hess on 2769 East Cherokee Street in Blacksburg, even when North Carolina gets Powerball®.
There were also more than 246,800 Powerball® winners who won prizes from $3 to $667,142.
