10/5/2002 12:00:00 AM

Columbia, SC: South Carolina has become the 24th jurisdiction to participate in the multi-state jackpot lotto game, Powerball, as tickets for the game go on sale throughout the Palmetto state beginning at 11 p.m..

Powerball tickets may be purchased at the same licensed South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) retail locations where players purchase other on-line games such as Pick 3 and Carolina 5.

The first Powerball drawing for South Carolina players will take place Wednesday, October 9, 2002. Powerball drawings will take place twice weekly, every Wednesday and Saturday at 11 p.m. eastern time. Tickets for Powerball may be purchased for up to 10 games in advance. Powerball tickets are available for purchase 5 a.m. to 12 a.m. daily, except for drawing days (Wednesday and Saturday), when sales are cut off at 9:45 p.m. in anticipation of the Powerball drawing. All other on-line lottery games will be available for purchase during and after this time.

All four of the following television stations that currently carry the 6:59 nightly SCEL drawings will also carry the Powerball drawing at 11 p.m.: WLTX, WCBD, WSPA and WPDE.

Players pay $1 and select five white balls from the first set of 53 numbers plus a single red ball, the Powerball, from the second set of 42 numbers. Players may select their own numbers using a Powerball play slip, or they may opt for computer-selected quick picks. Players must match all five numbers drawn plus the Powerball number to win the jackpot.

There are also eight additional ways for players to win a cash prize. The overall odds of winning a prize in Powerball are 1-in-36, and the overall odds of winning the jackpot are 1-in-120 million.

Since January 2002, the SCEL has returned over $100 million dollars to the State of South Carolina’s Lottery Education Fund. All of SCEL’s net proceeds go to pay for specific educational programs, including South Carolina’s HOPE, LIFE, Palmetto Fellows, National Guard; Lottery Tuition Assistance for 2 year programs within the state’s university system; a wide range of technical upgrades for state colleges and universities; school buses; local libraries and gambling addiction.
