Charlotte Man gets lucky, winning $400,000!

2/13/2003 11:00:00 PM

Columbia, SC: On Thursday, February 13, 2002, the South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) awarded one lucky winner $400,000 in winnings from Wednesday’s Powerball drawing.

Mr. Ventura, a resident of Charlotte, correctly matched five out of six winning Powerball numbers in Saturday’s drawing to win $100,000. Because he purchased Power Play, his winnings were multiplied by the Power Play number (4) to make his total winnings $400,000!

“The clerk asked me if I wanted Power Play, but I didn’t know what it was,” he explained. “When she explained it to me, I decided it was a good idea.”

For each Powerball® drawing, a spinning wheel with 15 slots numbered 2 through 5 (the wheel features three of each “2’s”, “3’s”, “4’s” and six “5’s”) is spun to select the Power Play® number.

For players who “Powered Up” and matched any of the Powerball® winning numbers in a particular drawing, the standard cash prize would be multiplied by that Power Play® number.

The winning ticket was purchased from the Carowinds Exxon Shop at 240 Carowinds Boulevard in Fort Mill.

Since January 2002, the SCEL has returned over $178 million dollars to the State of South Carolina’s Lottery Education Fund. All of SCEL’s net proceeds go to pay for specific educational programs, including South Carolina’s HOPE, LIFE, Palmetto Fellows, National Guard and 2 year institution’s scholarship programs.
