Columbia, SC: On Monday, February 3, the South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) will unveil the first 10 contestants heading to Las Vegas, Nevada to appear on the Powerball Instant Millionaire Game Show.
A press conference will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 3, in the SCEL Draw Studio at 1333 Main Street, in downtown Columbia. The on-air contestants will be on hand for interviews.
The following South Carolina cities will be represented on the game show: Ravenel, Moncks Corner, Lexington, Lake City, Mount Pleasant, Chesterfield, Hartsville and Spartanburg. Two players are from North Carolina cities -- Cameron and Cherryville.
“This is an opportunity of a lifetime for these players,” said Ernie Passailaigue, SCEL’s executive director. “Not only will the TV contestants win money, but players at home will win along with them.”
Powerball Instant Millionaire is a new type of game that offers, among other great prizes, a trip to Las Vegas to be a contestant on its game show. Players selected to appear on TV receive the following:
• A trip for two to Las Vegas, Nevada,
• Three nights' accommodations at The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino,
• $750 in spending cash, and
• Winnings of at least $1,000, with a chance to win $1,000,000.
To qualify as a contestant, players age 18 and older must first purchase a Vegas Jackpot instant ticket for $5 dollars. If the player reveals a TV symbol in the play area, he or she should fill out the back of the ticket, place a stamp on the “post card” and mail it to the SCEL.
“Each ticket also serves as a pre-addressed postcard,” said Passailaigue. “In the first drawing we received between 25,000 and 35,000 entries.”
In a drawing held in early January, 10 people were chosen to appear on the game show and 300 people – 30 per game show contestant -- were selected to be at-home players.
“Each at-home player automatically wins $100,” said Passailaigue. “Depending on how the South Carolina TV contestant fares on the show, each at-home player could win up to $10,000.”
Each game show contestant could play up to three rounds. If the contestant moves to the second round, at-home players will win $500. If the game show contestant advances to the final round and wins $1 million dollars, the at-home players will win $10,000.
Since January 2002, the SCEL has returned more than $178 million to the State of South Carolina’s Lottery Education Fund. All of SCEL’s net proceeds pay for specific educational programs, including South Carolina’s HOPE, LIFE and Palmetto Fellows scholarships; National Guard; Lottery Tuition Assistance for two-year programs within the state’s university system; a wide range of technical upgrades for state colleges and universities; school buses; local libraries and gambling addiction services.
