COLUMBIA, SC (November 29, 2011) – A Spartanburg couple is planning a nicer than expected Christmas for their grandkids complete with a lesson: Don’t be afraid to try something new.

A loyal Powerball® player, the Spartanburg grandmother is glad she stepped out of her comfort zone and asked for a Palmetto Cash 5 ticket instead.

The result, a $100,000 win.

“I didn’t believe it,” she said when she checked her numbers (9, 14, 15, 33, and 38) for the Friday, November 11 drawing online and all five matched.

Her husband’s reaction was equally confusing. He was calm. The winner told lottery officials while she was getting ready to come to Columbia to collect her prize, her husband was sitting at the table reading the newspaper.

“It didn’t seem like he wanted to go anywhere,” she said. When she asked if they were going to Columbia, he put the paper down and said, “Sure.”

“I was so excited, I forgot to buy my Powerball® ticket for Saturday,” said the winner.

The odds of winning $100,000 playing Palmetto Cash 5 are 1 in 501,942.

Hot Spot #2016 in Spartanburg received a commission of $1,000 for selling the claimed ticket.

Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than 932,000 college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $2.6 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
