COLUMBIA, SC (March 23, 2011) – A Hephzibah, GA, woman will take a chance and play the Lottery, but she doesn’t gamble with her winnings. Her $250,000 Mega Millions® prize is in the bank.
“I’ve never been a lavish spender, so I’m not going straight to the mall,” she said. “This money is going to cushion my retirement.”
According to the winner’s daughter, who accompanied her mom to claim the prize, a quarter million dollars isn’t going to change her mom’s thrifty nature.
“She’ll still play only the penny slots,” said the daughter, who had a confession of her own.
“I bought a lottery ticket for the first time this weekend,” she said.
She couldn’t resist after seeing her mom’s winning ticket. The ticket matched all five white ball numbers for the March 18, 2011, Mega Millions® drawing. Had the Megaball® matched, the $201 million jackpot would have been in the family.
Mega Millions® – Friday, March 18
14, 33, 34, 54, and 56 Megaball®: 37 Megaplier®: 4
Had the winner spent the extra $1 for the Megaplier®, the ticket would have been worth $1 million. The Match 5 prize with the purchase of the Megaplier® is an automatic $1 million, regardless of the Megaplier® number selected.
“We’ve been reminded of that extra $1,” she said. “But I’m pretty much content.”
Now that the prize has been paid, Mo Convenience and Tobacco Store in Beech Island has received $2,500, a 1 percent retailer commission.
The estimated Mega Millions® jackpot for Friday is $304 million.
