Columbia, SC (August 29, 2008) - South Carolina students are busy returning to college campuses across the state to begin another academic year. Many of these undergraduates are able to rely on the financial support provided by lottery-funded scholarships and grants. Since 2002 through academic year 2008, more than 588,000 scholarships totaling over $1.1 billion have been awarded to students in the Palmetto State.
Graduates from the Class of 2008 illustrate the many benefits of receiving lottery-funded support. Students currently enrolled in higher education as well as high school students planning for their future educational careers can learn from the examples set by the Class of 2008.
“Thanks to the LIFE Scholarship, I graduated without the burden of loans or financial debt,” commented South Carolina State University graduate Arfraja McLeod. “I first found out about the scholarship from my high school guidance counselor.”
Lottery-funded scholarships and grants are awarded to students who are South Carolina residents attending eligible in-state public and independent colleges and universities. This incentive helps to keep the best and the brightest students in the state.
“The LIFE Scholarship made my decision to stay in state much easier because of the financial support,” said Benedict College graduate Britney Rouse. “The scholarship made my time at college easier, because I didn’t have to take out loans.”
Lottery appropriations fund scholarships and grants in a wide range of categories. They include the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship, LIFE Scholarship, S.C. HOPE Scholarship, Needs-Based Grants, Lottery Tuition Assistance, and the National Guard College Assistance Program. Since January 7, 2002 through June 30, 2009, the General Assembly has appropriated more than $2 billion from the Education Lottery Account to supplement educational funding in South Carolina.
