COLUMBIA, SC (August 8, 2017) – A Hilton Head Island man says running out of milk led him to win $1 million playing the South Carolina Education Lottery.
He picked up a gallon of milk at the Publix Super Markets #700 on Palmetto Bay Rd. on Hilton Head Island and bought one other item, a Mega Millions® ticket.
“I’m a loyal player,” he admitted.
When he heard on the radio that the grocery store sold a ticket worth $1 million, he checked the numbers on his Mega Millions® ticket and checked them over and over again. The first five white ball numbers matched (18, 31, 36, 50, 74 and MB: 10) those drawn on Friday, July 21.
“Then I bought some more lottery tickets,” joked the millionaire.
He surprised his wife over lunch. He handed her an envelope and told her to open it. Inside was a photocopy of the Mega Millions® results and his ticket to compare.
The couple cashed in the winning ticket in Columbia yesterday.
“No, I didn’t believe him at first,” the wife said, laughing that she had a ticket in the car that matched the Megaball® number.
“This is going to relieve stress and be a comfort in life,” the husband said, adding it will also help finance their retirement and their kids’ college.
The odds of winning $1 million playing Mega Millions® are about 1 in 18.5 million.
For selling the claimed ticket, Publix Super Markets #700 on Hilton Head Island received a commission of $10,000.
The Mega Millions® jackpot for tonight’s drawing is an estimated $346 million. Good luck, South Carolina!
