COLUMBIA, SC (December 4, 2015) – A Greer man says his wife doesn’t know it yet, but she’s coming home to a millionaire tomorrow.
While she was out of town working, he won $1 million playing Mega Millions®.
“She’ll probably hit me for not telling her before she left,” joked the husband yesterday when he cashed in the winning ticket. “But I didn’t know myself.”
He thought he’d only won $1,000, and was taken by surprise when lottery staff in Columbia asked how it felt to win $1 million.
“Is that what I won?” he asked repeatedly. “I had no idea.”
The ticket sat in his car for nearly a month before he asked a retailer to check it this week. The retailer told him he’d have to go to Columbia to get paid, but didn’t tell him how much he won, and he didn’t ask.
“I can’t believe it,” he said taking a seat to process the news.
His Mega Millions® ticket purchased at the QuikTrip #1113 on Wade Hampton Blvd. in Greer matched the first five numbers draw on November 6 (10, 31, 35, 50, and 72 Megaball®: 8). He failed to match the Megaball® number, which cost him the jackpot. But he’s fine with $1 million.
“I’ve got everything I need,” he said. “But this will enable my wife to retire if she wants.”
And tomorrow she’ll get to make that decision.
The odds of winning $1 million playing Mega Millions® are about 1 in 18.5 million.
For selling the claimed ticket, QuikTrip #1113 in Greer received a commission of $10,000.
