COLUMBIA, SC (September 22, 2014) – A 22-year-old has won $1 million playing the South Carolina Education Lottery.
The young man from Florence was with his dad when it happened.
"I just walked in the store and bought a ticket," the son said, explaining how it's done.
The store was the Save Mart 4 on E. Palmetto St., where the father pulled in to fill up on their way to work. The son, who recently starting buying lottery tickets, picked out the $1,000,000 Fortune scratch-off, paying for the $10 ticket with spare change he'd put aside.
The father stopped the car a second time when he heard, "Dad, we are going to Columbia. I won $1 million."
But they went on to work and left the $1 million ticket locked in the car. The dad couldn't stop worrying if the ticket was real. The son didn't doubt it for a second.
"I told my dad, if I'd said I'd won $100 he'd have believed me," the winner said.
But Dad's a believer now. They've cashed in the ticket in Columbia.
And the father isn't worried the money will be too much for his son just starting out in life to handle.
"He always does the right thing," the dad said. "My wife and I raised a good boy."
The millionaire says the money is not going to change him. Today he's back at work.
The winner overcame odds of 1 in 1.4 million to become the first lottery millionaire in the $1,000,000 Fortune game. Two $1 million prizes remain on the ticket.
For selling the claimed ticket, Save Mart 4 in Florence received a commission of $10,000.
