COLUMBIA, SC (August 23, 2013) – Raising one child is expensive enough but imagine putting three through college, one right after the other.
That’s the reality for a Spartanburg man who, days before his youngest started college, bought a Powerball® ticket at the Li’l Cricket 3825 on Boiling Springs Rd. in Spartanburg.
He went back to the store this week and asked the clerk to check the ticket.
“I heard the winner’s music play and she told me I won more than $500, but she didn’t know how much more,” he said.
Turns out the ticket he had stuck in his car’s sun visor was worth $1 million.
Five of the Powerball® numbers he’s played for years, a combination of family birthdates and ages, were good enough to win him the $1 million prize in last Wednesday night’s drawing (4, 11, 17, 43, and 51 PB: 20).
Had the Powerball® number matched, the jackpot would have been his to spend.
“Nobody knows yet, not even my wife,” he confessed seated at the Columbia claims office.
When he deposits the check, his secret will be out.

The Li’l Cricket 3825 in Spartanburg received a commission of $10,000 for selling the claimed ticket.
Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than one million college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $3.1 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
