Surfside Woman Mails Winning Lottery Ticket Worth $100,000

COLUMBIA, SC (October 23, 2012) – While winning tickets worth $100,000 or less can be mailed, the vast majority of $100,000 winners come in person to the Lottery’s Columbia Claims Center to collect their winnings. A few months ago, a New Yorker vacationing in Myrtle Beach drove 12 hours back to South Carolina to cash in his $100,000 ticket.

But 150 miles was too much for a Surfside woman, who a few weeks ago entrusted the United States Postal Service with her $100,000 winning ticket.

“I’m a local driver,” she confessed when lottery officials called to ask why she mailed the ticket.

“I took a chance,” she admitted.

She told lottery officials she bought the winning Carolina Panthers ticket on her lunch hour and after scratching the ticket went back to work doubting she won. She’s kept the win a secret, waiting for word from the Lottery.

Her check’s in the mail.

As of this release, two top prizes remain in the Carolina Panthers game. The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 540,000.

For selling the claimed ticket, Kangaroo Express #3062 in Surfside Beach received a commission of $1,000.

Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than one million college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $2.8 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
