COLUMBIA, SC (November 21, 2012) – In less than a week’s time, two Gaffney retailers have sold winning lottery tickets worth $100,000.
Luck struck the Pilot Travel Center #435 on Hyatt St. first, where a Mooresville, NC, man pulled off the interstate for gas and a Palmetto Cash 5 ticket. He didn’t check his ticket for last Wednesday’s drawing until Saturday to find all five numbers matched (6, 9, 23, 27 and 33).
“God bless America,” he said.
Because the drawing produced two top prize winners, he was convinced he would have to share the $100,000 prize with the other winner. He was visibly surprised to learn the whole $100,000 was his.
“I’m not a material guy,” he said. “I work hard and will have to pay it forward.”
Closer into town, the Auto Stop on Cherokee Ave. sold a $100,000 winning ticket, this one a scratch-off, to a local woman. The winner told lottery officials she scratched the $5 Holiday Wishes tickets sitting in her car in the store’s parking lot. She called her mom when she won.
“I was pretty calm,” she said. “My mom was screaming.”
Both winners say they will continue buying lottery from these respective retailers. For selling the claimed ticket, each retailer received a commission of $1,000.
The odds of winning $100,000 playing Palmetto Cash 5 are 1 in 501,942. The odds of winning the same on Holiday Wishes are 1 in 480,000.
Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than one million college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $2.9 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
