COLUMBIA, SC (May 22, 2013) – A group of 24 co-workers at a retail store in North Carolina is sharing a $2 million Powerball® prize won in Saturday night’s record-setting $590 million drawing.

After taxes, that’s about $56,000 each.

The group pooled their money and bought a total of 80 Powerball® tickets from the K Won Mart on Hwy. 160 W. in Fort Mill. Why did they play in South Carolina?

“We thought there wasn’t a tax in South Carolina,” laughed one of the winner’s realizing their mistake.

The clerk talked the group’s buyer into spending the extra $1 for PowerPlay®. They are thankful she complied. Spending the extra $1 increased their would be $1 million prize to $2 million.

The group learned Sunday at work that they had won. One member fell to the floor, others thought they were going to faint, but most were hugging after beating the 1 in 5 million plus odds to match the first five white ball numbers drawn on Saturday, May 18 (10, 13, 14, 22, and 52, PB: 11).

“There was genuine happiness, even from those that didn’t play,” said one of the winners.

Group members are planning to get braces for their kids, pay bills, take vacations, buy homes and invest.

“My wife still doesn’t believe me,” said one of the 24.

K Won Mart received a commission of $20,000 for selling the claimed ticket.

Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than one million college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $3 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
