Spartanburg Proves Lucky Spot to Play Your Numbers

9/26/2012 10:44:56 AM

COLUMBIA, SC (September 26, 2012) – Spartanburg is establishing itself as a lucky town to play your numbers.

In a Lottery first, Spartanburg retailers have sold the last three top prize winning Palmetto Cash 5 tickets.

A total of $400,000 was won by the three winners this month.

The winners have another thing in common: They picked their own numbers.

On Sunday, a Spartanburg County man played family birth dates (2, 5, 6, 20, and 25) at PSM Convenience at 221A Sibley St. in Spartanburg to win $100,000.

“I jumped for joy,” he told to lottery officials on Monday awaiting his check.

That same method worked for a Gaffney man, whose grandchildren’s birth dates won him $200,000 on September 5. The Wilco Hess #912 on 2798 E. Main St. sold the winning ticket.

The next day’s Palmetto Cash 5 drawing was won by a Spartanburg woman, who played license tag numbers. Her $100,000 winning ticket was purchased from the Hot Spot #2011 on 3180 N. Blackstock Rd.

About a 10 mile drive separates these retailers where players beat the 1 in 501,942 odds on Palmetto Cash 5 not once, but three times. In 2010, Spartanburg retailers came close when a back-to-back win streak was interrupted by a Dillon win, but Spartanburg answered taking the following drawing.

To date, Spartanburg County retailers have sold 11 top prize winning Palmetto Cash 5 tickets.

Palmetto Cash 5 drawings are held every day at 6:59 p.m. Tickets are $1. The game plays similarly to Powerball, with players selecting five numbers and the option to Power-Up for an additional $1. The Gaffney winner spent the extra $1 and saw his $100,000 prize increased to $200,000.
