COLUMBIA, SC (October 20, 2011) – Carl Butts works at Kroger, so it only makes sense he buys his lottery tickets there.
He scratches the tickets when he gets off work sitting out in his truck in the grocery store’s parking lot. The proof, he jokes, is in the pile of ticket shavings in the floor board.
Three weeks have passed since he headed home from a day of stocking shelves and ordering merchandise for the Carolina Forest Kroger in Myrtle Beach with a lottery ticket worth $100,000.
Butts has been buying a few $5 Jeep® instant tickets since May when the ticket first came out. He was hoping he would win the Jeep® Wrangler seen on the front of the ticket. He’ll take the cash.
His wife, a teacher at Ocean Bay Elementary, still can’t believe he really won. She told lottery officials her husband didn’t sleep for a week afterward. Then he had to deal with everyone at the work making fun of him for not collecting the prize right away.
“Everybody at work thinks I’m crazy, because I haven’t already been over to get the money,” he said. “They keep asking me, ‘What are you waiting on?’”
“My boss even asked me if I needed him to drive me here,” he said.
Butts was waiting for a day off from work.
He waited 21 days with no regrets.
“I can’t quit work for $100,000,” he said.
The Myrtle Beach man won the last top prize on the Jeep® instant ticket. The odds of winning $100,000 were 1 in 520,000. Players may still enter non-winning tickets in the Jeep® second-chance promotion for the chance to win a Jeep® or $100,000 in the final drawing.
The Kroger #26 in Myrtle Beach where Butts works received a commission of $1,000 for selling the claimed ticket.
