COLUMBIA, SC (March 22, 2012) – Friday night’s Mega Millions® drawing is for an estimated $290 MILLION. The top 10 jackpot touts the largest purse seen in a year.
Ticket sales are swift in South Carolina.
“We’re not just a Powerball® state,” said the Lottery’s Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea. “We sell Mega Millions® too, and South Carolinians have taken notice of the game’s higher jackpot.”
“I know I won’t be the only one tuned into the Mega Millions® drawing on Friday night with my fingers crossed hoping for a South Carolinian to win,” added Bethea.
While South Carolina has yet to produce a Mega Millions® jackpot winner, lottery players are hungry for one. The March 20 Mega Millions® drawing left a player in Beaufort holding a $250,000 winner, missing the then $241 million jackpot by one number.
A South Carolinian will have to beat the 1 in 175 million odds to walk away with Friday night’s $205 million cash payout.
“The odds are daunting,” said Bethea. “If you have an extra dollar to spend and want to take a chance, that’s great. If you need that dollar for something else, keep it in your pocket. The Lottery urges everyone to play responsibly.”
For those wanting to take a chance on Friday night’s drawing, you must purchase tickets prior to 10 p.m. for the 11 p.m. drawing.
“A $290 million jackpot is exciting for our players and this state, but the real winner is education,” Bethea said.
