Retired Chapin Couple Wins $1 MILLION Playing Powerball®

7/29/2011 12:47:51 PM

COLUMBIA, SC (July 29, 2011) – A retired Chapin couple was lunching on leftovers and watching the midday news, when the reporter mentioned a $1 MILLION Powerball® ticket had been sold nearby.

The wife went to get her ticket.

Using the newspaper, she checked her numbers and realized the reporter was talking about her.

“I couldn’t finish my dessert,” she said. “The ticket was my dessert.”

The ticket matched all five white ball numbers for Wednesday’s Powerball® drawing (38, 40, 41, 51, 59 PB: 33). She purchased PowerPlay® for an extra $1, which multiplied her $200,000 winnings to $1 MILLION. The Match 5 prize with PowerPlay® is an automatic $1 MILLION, regardless of the PowerPlay® number selected.

The winner and her husband turned the ticket in today.

They told lottery officials the phone tree in Chapin was hot yesterday. Calls were coming in from neighbors and friends wondering if they knew who won the cash, but these two kept quiet.

“We feel we won so we can give back,” the winner shared. “Local charities in Chapin will be blessed. We want to help people in the community that need it.”

The folks at Kangaroo Express #476 at 1259 Chapin Road in Chapin are also celebrating. Now that the prize has been paid, the location has received $10,000, a 1 percent retailer commission.

The estimated Powerball® jackpot for tomorrow night is $133 million.
