Florence-Darlington Technical College Student Appreciates the Support of Lottery Tuition Assistance

10/8/2010 2:38:10 PM

Columbia, SC (10/8/10) – Students of all ages across South Carolina benefit from the proceeds generated by the South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL). Whether it is a grade school student attending a public school that has received some of the $599 million appropriated for K-12 education, a retiree using computers at the local library to research a new hobby, or a high school graduate preparing to go to college with the help of a lottery-funded scholarship, the Lottery’s net proceeds are making a positive difference to the students of the Palmetto State.

But don’t take our word for it! Here is a testimonial from a recipient of one of the more than 820,000 lottery-funded scholarships and grants awarded to students since 2002.

“My name is Leah Cooksey. I am currently a student at Florence-Darlington Technical College in Florence, SC. I am in my last semester of school and will be receiving my Associate Degree in Criminal Justice, with a 3.7 grade point average, in May of 2011. Lottery Tuition Assistance is important to me because I am a single mother, who works full time while trying to complete my education so I can provide a better life for my daughter. Because of the immense monetary demands of raising a child single-handedly, lottery proceeds have made fulfilling my Criminal Justice degree possible.”

“Most of the money from my full-time job goes toward necessities for my daughter, her school, the rent, and groceries. With the help of Lottery Tuition Assistance I was able to purchase the books and supplies I needed to finish my classes so I can graduate. I am very grateful for all of the assistance I have received from funding generated by the South Carolina Education Lottery. If Lottery Tuition Assistance was not available to technical college students, single parents, like myself, would not be able to further their education and graduate with improved job skills.”

Lottery-funded scholarships and grants are awarded to students who are South Carolina residents attending eligible in-state public and independent colleges and universities. The South Carolina Education Lottery neither administers nor awards lottery-funded scholarships and grants.
Lottery appropriations fund scholarships and grants in a wide range of categories. They include the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship, LIFE Scholarship, S.C. HOPE Scholarship, Needs-Based Grants, Lottery Tuition Assistance, and the National Guard College Assistance Program. For more information on lottery-funded scholarships and grants, contact the Commission on Higher Education’s Information Hotline at 1-877-349-7183 or online at www.che.sc.gov.

Since January 7, 2002 through June 30, 2010, the General Assembly has appropriated more than $2.5 billion from the Education Lottery Account to supplement educational funding in South Carolina. The funds SCEL earns and deposits into the Education Lottery Account are dedicated to the state’s students and educational institutions.
