COLUMBIA, SC (February 12, 2010) – “Thank you, Jesus!” That’s the reaction a Lake City player had when her Instant Carolina 5 ticket revealed a $100,000 taxes paid prize. The winner does not want her name made public, but she did tell lottery staff she plans to enjoy her winnings and buy a new car. The player purchased her lucky ticket at Markette Store #18 in Lake City. Every retailer that sells a claimed ticket of $10,000 or more earns a 1 percent commission. The sales incentive is capped at $50,000.
Since the Lottery’s inception in 2002, the General Assembly has appropriated more than $2.2 billion for educational purposes through fiscal year 2010. Approximately 97 cents of every dollar spent by players on the South Carolina Education Lottery is returned to the state in the form of contributions to education, prizes, retailer commissions, and payment to contractors for goods and services.
