COLUMBIA, SC (March 3, 2009) – Seeing is believing for one lucky man who held a winning lottery ticket in his hands! “I looked at the ticket and then I rubbed my eyes, then I looked at it again,” said Willie Sherman.
Minutes before, the Orangeburg man bought the $10 Money Tree lottery ticket at Quick Pantry #35 in Orangeburg. He scratched the ticket in his truck parked outside the store and discovered he had won the game’s top prize of $250,000. The next day Sherman took the winning ticket to the Columbia Claims Center to cash it.
What are his plans for the prize? He looked down at his worn steel-toed boots and said “I think I’ll buy a new pair.”
Since the Lottery’s inception in 2002, the General Assembly has appropriated more than $2 billion for educational purposes through fiscal year 2009. In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008, more than 97 cents of every dollar spent by players on the South Carolina Education Lottery was returned to the state in the form of contributions to education, prizes, retailer commissions and payment to contractors for goods and services.
