COLUMBIA, SC (March 3, 2009) – Lottery retailers are accustomed to congratulating winners. When a Newberry resident walked in Thursday night with a winning instant ticket worth $200,000, the staff at Corner Stop #60 in Newberry couldn’t contain themselves.
“They [the retailer] checked the ticket, and the girl in the store starts calling everybody, telling them a customer had a big winning ticket,” said the winner, a Newberry resident.
The player, who does not wish to be identified, bought the Cash Payout ticket earlier in the day. He was cleaning out his pockets later that night when he found and scratched the ticket. He went back to the retailer for confirmation.
“My kids told me I was acting like a little boy,” the winner said. He plans to save some of the winnings and share with his church. The player and his family feel it is important to help others and give back. The winnings will allow the family to continue making a difference in their community.
Since the Lottery’s inception in 2002, the General Assembly has appropriated more than $2 billion for educational purposes through fiscal year 2009. In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008, more than 97 cents of every dollar spent by players on the South Carolina Education Lottery was returned to the state in the form of contributions to education, prizes, retailer commissions and payment to contractors for goods and services.
