Winner scratches-off a winning $10 instant game

Columbia, SC: Harold Gray, of Port Royal, sat anxiously in the South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL)’s Columbia Claims Center on Wednesday, July 12.

“I came up here to get my retirement,” said Gray, a professional handyman. “I’ve got a ways to go before I truly retire. I have customers I have made promises to, and I have to live up to them.”

Gray won $250,000 on the instant ticket, $250,000 Taxes Paid. He purchased his ticket at Piedmont Petro Happy Mart #40, located on Sea Island Parkway in Lady.

“I purchased two of them [tickets],” said Gray. “The orange one [Carolina Millionaires Club] and the green one [$250,000 Taxes Paid]. I scratched the green one and had an auto play for that one, so I said, ‘Give me another one.’ I took the ticket and headed to work. I scratched the first number. Then I pick another number to scratch and I did. That was it. That was the winner.”

For Gray the win is surreal. “It still hasn’t sunken in until you give me the check,” Gray said.

He plans to pay off his debt, set some money aside in a mutual fund, and the rest will go towards his daughter’s college education.
