Columbia, SC (March 22, 2005): If you ever thought about how it feels to win the lottery, just ask the newest member to South Carolina Education Lottery’s (SCEL) list of winners. Well, maybe his name isn’t that new to the list.

“It’s exhilarating,” said 63-year-old Ken from Wilmington, N.C.! He has asked lottery officials to not reveal his last name.

For 11 days, SCEL officials have waited for its first $500,000 Palmetto Cash 5 winner to come forward and claim his or her prize. Ken says he had car trouble and he couldn’t get down to Columbia until today. “The ride here was a pleasant one,” said Ken. But this isn’t the first brush of luck Ken has had with lottery officials.

“I won $100,000 taxes paid with Carolina 5 when it first came out,” said Ken. “I have also won the top prize in Pick 4 about three times as well.”

To total up Ken’s winnings since SCEL began selling lottery tickets, “It’s roughly $700,000!”

He’s won numerous times on Pick 3 and just two weeks ago, Ken won $10,000 in the instant game, $40 Million Spectacular Cash.

There’s no rhyme or reason to Ken’s winnings. He quick picks his numbers every time. He has three different SCEL locations he likes to play. One of them is the B & B Cash and Carry in Loris.

“They are so nice to me,” said Ken. “They are family owned and they know how to treat their customers.”

Ken has shared his winnings with his children, grandchildren, his grandchildren’s education fund and even his ex-wife! Yes ladies - he’s single.

When asked what his plans were now, “To buy a house in Charlotte to be closer to my grandchildren and my son,” he said smiling.

South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) launched Palmetto Cash 5 on February 12, 2005. Since then, seven people have won the top prize, $100,000. Of that, five of them have paid the extra $1 for the Power-Up feature to multiply their winnings. More than $3.3 million has been paid to all winners.

In fiscal year 2005 to date, SCEL has transferred more than $183 million to the Education Lottery Account through January 2005 and is on track to achieve the Board of Economic Advisors goal of transferring $255 million. Since January 2002, SCEL has transferred more than $771 million to the account to be appropriated by the Legislature to support educational programs in South Carolina.
