Columbia, SC: On Monday, November 4, 2002, The South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) awarded Christine Smith $100,000 for correctly matching five of six winning Powerball numbers in Saturday’s draw.
Christine Smith, who lives in Hollywood, purchased about $25 dollars worth of tickets on Saturday night with her husband Chris Smith and their four month old, C.J. After buying the tickets, she rubbed C.J’s stomach for good luck. “He’s my miracle baby. I wasn’t supposed to be able to have him.” She explained in the Claims Center. “So I rubbed his stomach and told him to win me some money.”
A miracle baby indeed! Smith matched five numbers out of the six winning Powerball tickets to win $100,000. After watching the drawing, she made her husband stay up and watch the news just to verify the numbers. “I couldn’t believe it,” she said.
One day while going to work, Smith ran into an employee from the Make-A-Wish Foundation and told them that once she won the lottery, she’d be back. She kept her promise. Smith plans to donate a portion of the money to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “I’m going to send a little girl with leukemia to Disney World.”
The winning ticket was purchased from The Pantry #886 at 4315 Savannah Highway in Ravenel.
Since January 2002, the SCEL has returned over $112 million dollars to the State of South Carolina’s Lottery Education Fund. All of SCEL’s net proceeds go to pay for specific educational programs, including South Carolina’s HOPE, LIFE, Palmetto Fellows, National Guard and 2 year institution’s scholarship programs.
