Spontaneous Decision to Play Powerball® Pays Off in Cowpens

4/18/2024 10:10:00 AM

COLUMBIA, SC (April 18, 2024) A spur of the moment decision to play Powerball® paid off for an Upstate woman. She won $100,000.

The winner says she didn’t intend to buy a Powerball® ticket when she stopped in at the Scotchman store on Battleground Rd. in Cowpens, but took a chance on a quick pick. The ticket with PowerPlay® matched all but one number drawn on February 28 (16, 26, 29, 38, 50 and PB: 6). The odds of that happening are nearly 1 in a million.

“I was definitely surprised,” she told South Carolina Education Lottery officials after cashing in the ticket. “I kept rechecking it to be sure it was true.”

And she wasn’t the only one surprised. Her siblings were stunned to find out she was sharing some of the winnings with them.  “I wanted to make positive changes for my family,” she said.

For selling the claimed ticket, Scotchman #3848 in Cowpens received a commission of $1,000.
