10/25/2018 11:07:18 AM

COLUMBIA, SC (October 25, 2018) – While the nation waits for South Carolina’s $1.5 billion Mega Millions® jackpot winner to emerge, the Education Lottery has a message for the winner who is preparing for what will be a life changing event.

“We want you to take a deep breath, and before you come forward to claim the prize, sign the back of the ticket, secure the ticket in a safe location and seek council from a trusted financial planner, CPA, or lawyer,” voiced the Lottery’s Chief Operating Officer Tony Cooper yesterday at a press conference announcing the largest jackpot in Mega Millions® history had been hit in South Carolina.

The winner has 180 days from the draw date to claim the state’s largest jackpot winning ticket. The ticket was sold at a KC Mart #7 on Lee Vaughn Rd. in Simpsonville.

One of the first decisions the winner must make is a choice between the cash option of approximately $878 million or the annuity, the full jackpot amount paid out in yearly payments over 29 years.

While the South Carolina Education Lottery urges its players to always play responsibly, the Lottery also wants players to win responsibly.

Until the winner comes forward, presents the ticket and the ticket is validated as the winning ticket –there is no winner to announce. Tickets can be presented at the Lottery’s Claims Center on Assembly St. in Columbia open Monday thru Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. A winning ticket must be presented by 4 p.m. to allow time for validation.
