COLUMBIA, SC (April 8, 2014) – Three weeks seemed short to a Lake City man that had waited 10 years for his lottery numbers to be drawn.
He won Palmetto Cash 5’s top prize on March 18 but didn’t cash in the ticket until yesterday.
“I was persistent,” he said explaining how he went about winning.
He saw his numbers flash across the evening news. He hopped up and rummaged around for an old ticket he could use for verification and then ran out to his truck where he’d left the real $200,000 winning ticket.
Worn out, he had to sit down and rest before telling his wife.
“I hugged him and told him congratulations,” his wife said.
In 10 years, she never once complained when he bought a lottery ticket.
“I thought he was playing responsibly,” she said.
Now he says he’s done playing and has abandoned his numbers 1, 13, 22, 29 and 36 altogether.
“One of them was my birthday,” he said.
Spending the extra dollar for Power-Up doubled his $100,000 prize to $200,000.
Odds of winning $200,000 playing Palmetto Cash 5 are 1 in 1,003,884.
For selling the claimed ticket, Amoco Food Shop #10 in Lake City received a commission of $2,000.
To date, lottery play has resulted in more than $3.3 billion transferred to support education.
