COLUMBIA, SC (September 25, 2012) – A Sumter man was in no rush to claim a $10,000 winning lottery ticket he purchased back in March, allowing himself a mere five-day cushion to collect the cash.
The Mega Millions® ticket the winner showed up with on Friday was one of three $10,000 winning tickets set to expire this Wednesday, September 26. The other two tickets were sold in Gaffney and Charleston. The Sumter resident admits if he is lucky enough to win again, he won’t wait quite so long.
“I drove by the lottery office probably 20 times or more but didn’t have the ticket,” he said.
While the remaining two ticket holders may not realize they’ve won $10,000, the Sumter man knew he was a winner following the $656 million Mega Millions® drawing on March 30. He chose to leave the ticket purchased from the Citgo in Sumter in his desk drawer until he was ready to come forward and accept he missed a share of the historic jackpot by one number.
“I was so close,” he spoke. “At first, I thought I had it all.”
Tomorrow is the last day to claim the two remaining $10,000 Mega Millions® tickets purchased for the March 30 drawing from Northbridge Exxon at 1140 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. in Charleston and the Kangaroo Express #3406 at 100 Shelby Hwy. in Gaffney.
The tickets matched four white ball numbers and the gold Megaball® number.
Mega Millions® – Friday, March 30
2 - 4 - 23 - 38 - 46 Megaball®: 23 Megaplier®: 3
If the prizes are not claimed, the winnings will be deposited in the Education Lottery Account to support educational programs in South Carolina.
Players have 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim their prizes. For complete information on claiming prizes, visit sceducationlottery.com.
