Columbia, SC: The Powerball® jackpot has surpassed the $100 million mark just in time for the holiday season.
Because no one correctly matched all six numbers in Saturday’s drawing, the jackpot is now an estimated $101 million. This is the largest jackpot in the nation! The drawing on Saturday night was the 12th consecutive draw nation without being hit.
“I hope someone from South Carolina wins this jackpot on Wednesday,” said Ernie Passailaigue, the South Carolina Education Lottery’s (SCEL) Executive Director. “Sales have been brisk.”
The odds of winning the Powerball® jackpot is 1 out of 120, 526,770. “We want our players to know, the odds of winning the jackpot are long,” says Passailaigue. “If you are going to play, use discretionary dollars only and play responsibly.”
If a winner chooses the one time cash option, the player will take home $54.5 million. The Powerball® drawing will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2002 at 11 p.m.
Since January 2002, the SCEL has returned over $135 million dollars to the State of South Carolina’s Lottery Education Fund. All of SCEL’s net proceeds go to pay for specific educational programs, including South Carolina’s HOPE, LIFE, Palmetto Fellows, National Guard; Lottery Tuition Assistance for 2 year programs within the state’s university system; a wide range of technical upgrades for state colleges and universities; school buses; local libraries and gambling addiction.
