Lottery Commissioners Give Powerball the Green Lig

4/23/2002 12:00:00 AM

Columbia, SC: On Tuesday, April 23, 2002 the South Carolina Lottery Commissioners voted to submit an application to join the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), contingent upon legislative approval.

The application process consists of signing a letter of intent and an in-depth review of the South Carolina Education Lottery’s operations by MUSL.

“We would welcome the SCEL with open arms,” says MUSL Executive Director Chuck Strutt. Strutt, along with members of the POWERBALL Association, presented Lottery Commissioners with information on how the game operates.

“MUSL is run by state lotteries,” says Strutt. “Most, if not all of the lotteries involved, have seen an increase in sales. And there’s no cost to the state.”

MUSL members would have to unanimously vote in the South Carolina Education Lottery (SCEL) before tickets could go on sale. Once all approvals have been obtained, it will be several months before POWERBALL could be offered for sale by South Carolina retailers.

“We were very impressed with MUSL’s presentation,” says Ernie Passailaigue, SCEL’s Executive Director. “If we are allowed to partner with MUSL, the opportunities for new educational funds would be greatly enhanced”.
