COLUMBIA, SC (July 15, 2022) – While celebrating its 20th year, the South Carolina Education Lottery is reporting its second best contribution to education.
South Carolina’s students will benefit from a transfer of $564 million in lottery funds for Fiscal Year 2022. This brings the Lottery’s total funding for education to $7.2 BILLION since startup in 2002.
“It’s been an incredible 20 years and amazing to think that in just the last two years we’ve raised more than a billion dollars for education,” said the Lottery’s Executive Director Hogan Brown. “These funds have had an immeasurable impact in our state, now reaching two generations of parents and their children.”
The Lottery continues to refresh its products as a new play feature, FIREBALL®, was added to Pick 3 and Pick 4 and Double Play® was added to Powerball®. Powerball® also added a Monday draw. CASH POP, a new one-digit draw game launched in January, has far exceed sales expectations.
Additionally, lottery players won more than $1.4 billion in prize money and lottery retailers earned in excess of $158 million in commissions in FY 2022.
Chairman of the SC Lottery Commission, Sam Litchfield adds, “On behalf of the Board, what the Lottery was able to achieve again this year is excellent. In uncertain times, we have made another significant investment in education. And in that, we all win.”
Lottery proceeds are deposited into the Education Lottery Account, from which the General Assembly makes appropriations in support of higher education scholarships and grants, K-12 public education programs and community education programs throughout the state.
