Columbia Couple Makes Million Dollar Discovery

COLUMBIA, SC (February 24, 2015) – A Columbia woman got quite a surprise yesterday when she checked a Powerball® ticket that’s been in her purse for weeks. The ticket was worth $1 million.

The news sickened her husband.

“I almost threw up when I saw the ticket,” he said. “She’s been walking around with $1 million in her pocketbook!”

He says he’s always buying tickets for his wife that she doesn’t check. This one he bought in Chester at the Kushi Food Mart on JA Cochran Bypass for the drawing on January 28.

Twenty-six days later they realized the ticket matched the first five numbers drawn (12, 24, 35, 36, and 49) but missed the red Powerball® number (1). Failing to match the red Powerball® number cost them the $261 million jackpot, but they didn’t seem to care.

In fact, the couple couldn’t stop laughing.

“Now I’m embarrassed I gave her such a cheap Valentine’s gift,” joked the husband.

“You can make it up to me now,” the wife responded.

The couple wants to stay humble and is keeping the win low key with no extravagant spending on the horizon.

“It doesn’t matter if we have $20 or $1 million,” said the husband. “We always have fun together.”

The odds of winning $1 million playing Powerball® are about 1 in 5 million.

For selling the claimed ticket, Kushi Food Mart in Chester received a commission of $10,000.
