Mega Millions® Jackpot Climbs to $140 MILLION

10/28/2010 10:34:41 AM

COLUMBIA, SC (October 28, 2010) – South Carolina, the Mega Millions® jackpot now stands at an estimated $140 MILLION.

The next drawing is Friday night at 11 p.m. Tickets are $1 and can be purchased at lottery retailers statewide. Players can purchase Megaplier® for an additional $1 to multiply non-jackpot winnings by the Megaplier® number selected.

Over the past two months, four South Carolina Education Lottery players have been one number short of winning the Mega Millions® jackpot. These close calls were purchased in Rock Hill, Gaston, Greer and Bluffton. One of these winners purchased Megaplier® and saw their $10,000 winnings multiplied to $30,000!

Originally a Powerball® state, the Lottery began offering Mega Millions® in January of this year. Now with a jackpot of more than $100 million, Mega Millions® is the game of the moment.

"A lot people play when the jackpot reaches their magical number," said Tony Cooper, the Lottery’s Chief Operating Officer. "The odds remain the same—long. Players must play responsibly."

The odds of winning the Mega Millions® jackpot are 1 in 175,711,536, slightly better than the 1 in 195,249,054 odds of winning at Powerball®.

Approximately 97 cents of every dollar spent by players on the South Carolina Education Lottery is returned to the state in the form of funding for education, prizes, retailer commissions, and payment to contractors for goods and services.
