Camden Woman Reels In an Alaskan Adventure Trip

5/9/2011 8:43:57 AM

COLUMBIA, SC (May 6, 2011) – Melissa Burnell and her husband, Farrell, were out on Lake Wateree fishing when Melissa’s cell phone rang.

“It’s the Lottery,” she whispered.

“What do they want?” questioned Farrell.

Melissa answered in a series of screams that startled the fishermen in a nearby cove, who looked over to see what she was reeling in.

She didn’t have a fish on the line, only the promise of a fishing trip to Alaska. She won the prize in the South Carolina Education Lottery’s Bass Pro Shops® second-chance promotion.

Melissa’s name was selected from the more than 95,500 entries received to win one of five Adventure Trips of a Lifetime. The couple picked Alaska from the six trip destinations offered.

“We’ve always wanted to go to Alaska,” said Farrell. “I’ve heard you can pull in fish bigger than people there.”

On the day the Lottery called with the news, Farrell pulled in a 10-pound cat fish from Lake Wateree. Now, he’s got his sights set on an Alaskan, 400-pound halibut.

“My entire family is avid outdoorsmen,” said Melissa. “We love hunting and fishing, and we can’t wait to go to Alaska.”

Players can still enter their non-winning Bass Pro Shops® instant tickets for the final drawing that will award one adventure trip and one $100,000 cash prize. For complete information on the Bass Pro Shops® second-chance promotion visit: https://www.2ndchancedraw.com/scbps/.

Approximately 97 cents of every dollar spent by players on the South Carolina Education Lottery is returned to the state in the form of funding for education, prizes, retailer commissions, and payment to contractors for good and services.
