Shopping for a Mother’s Day Gift, Lowcountry Man Wins $500,000

COLUMBIA, SC (May 12, 2022) – On a trip to the grocery store for a Mother’s Day card and flowers, a Lowcountry man got himself a gift too. He bought a $10 lottery ticket and was surprised to win $500,000.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would win,” he told South Carolina Education Lottery officials. “I hoped I would, but I never thought it would happen.”

He says the Publix store on State Rd. in Summerville didn’t have the lottery ticket he really wanted, but he tried the Palmetto Payout game instead. He scratched the ticket sitting in his car in the store’s parking lot.

“I just sat there for 15 minutes letting it sink in,” he said. Then he got his wife on the phone to tell her the big news.

“This is a life changing event for us,” he said. “We are going to be debt free and enjoy life.”

And the winner still has one more person to tell, his mom, who was the reason he stopped by the store in the first place.

“I’m going to surprise her,” he said.

The winner, who does not wish to be identified, overcame odds of 1 in 840,000 to win $500,000 on the ($10) Palmetto Payout ticket. Three more top prizes remain in the game.

Publix Super Markets Inc. #1266 in Summerville received a commission of $5,000 for selling the claimed ticket.
