Powerball® Ticket Bought in Late Mother’s Honor Wins Daughter $1 Million

COLUMBIA, SC (April 14, 2021) – A Hilton Head Island resident bought a Powerball® ticket in honor of her late mother and won $1 million.

“I wish I could call my mom,” the daughter told lottery officials. “But she knows. She’s smiling down from heaven and dancing.”

The winner says her mother played the lottery for years and never won. In remembrance of her mom, she purchased 10 Powerball® quick picks at the Speedway store on William Hilton Pkwy. for the drawing that took place on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17.

Two weeks later, on April Fool’s Day, she remembered the Powerball® ticket was in her wallet, got it and checked the results. The first five numbers matched to win her the $1 million prize (34 - 38 - 42 - 61 - 62, and Powerball® 19).

“I was shocked,” she said. “I’m going to do what my mom would have wanted to do for our family is she’d won.”

That means making plans to take care of the family now and in the future.

The odds of winning $1 million are 1 in 11,688,054.

For selling the claimed ticket, Speedway #02879 on Hilton Head Island received a commission of $10,000.

The estimated Powerball® jackpot for Wednesday night’s drawing is $67 million.
