COLUMBIA, SC (May 18, 2012) – A Sumter woman who is being treated for cancer has won $200,000 playing Palmetto Cash 5.
She told lottery officials before going to bed she checked her lottery ticket online for Wednesday night’s drawing. She laid awake all night wondering if the numbers she picked (7, 22, 24, 30, and 31), like her brother’s birth date and the age she was when she had her first born, were in fact worth $200,000.
“Just let this be so,” she repeated to herself.
She rescheduled a doctor’s appointment anxious to have the Lottery take a look at the ticket.
“I told myself I was not going to get excited until I knew for sure,” she said. “I’m excited now.”
She welcomed the good news and can’t wait to tell her children after years of playing the Lottery she finally overcame the one in a million plus odds to win the top prize on Palmetto Cash 5. The winner told lottery officials she won at a point in her life when she needed the money the most.
“This means everything to me,” she said.
Once she takes care of her bills, she is paying off her house.
Spending the extra $1 for Power-Up increased her would be $100,000 winnings to $200,000 when a “2” was selected.
Sumter Stop of Sumter received a commission of $2,000 for selling the claimed ticket.
Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than one million college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $2.7 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
