COLUMBIA, SC (May 3, 2012) – A retired Lancaster man has won $200,000 on a scratch-off ticket. If the Chevy bowtie on his cap is any indication, he’ll be driving a new Chevrolet truck soon.
He is also paying off everything and indulging in a long overdue vacation.
“Is this for real?” he asked waiting for the check.
He beat the 1 in 480,000 odds on the $10 Money Mania scratch-off to take home the game’s last top prize of $200,000. He told lottery officials the most he had won before was $500.
A clerk at Bufford Express Mart #6 at 4433 Pageland Hwy. in Lancaster sold him the winning ticket. He realized he won in the store, showed the clerk the ticket and headed for the door to call his neighbor of 30 years.
“I don’t ever believe anything he says,” joked the winner’s neighbor, who drove him to collect his prize. “He showed me the ticket, but he wouldn’t even let me hold it. He said he had to go hide it.”
He kept it under his hat.
For selling the claimed ticket, Bufford Express Mart #6 received a commission of $2,000.
Since the start of the Lottery in 2002, more than one million college scholarships and grants have been awarded to South Carolina’s students. In all, more than $2.7 BILLION has been transferred to support educational programs in the Palmetto State.
