COLUMBIA, SC (September 15, 2022) – A Sumter man got emotional when he won $200,000 playing the South Carolina Education Lottery.
“I couldn’t stop crying,” he told lottery officials.
He says he was at home, sitting on the couch, when he scratched off the first top prize win on the Carolina Jackpot ticket and teared up. He purchased the $5 ticket from the Town and Country store on Hwy. 15 S. in Sumter.
Once he was able to speak, he told his wife the good news.
“I must have told her 50 times,” he said.
His wife didn’t believe him, at least not right away. He showed her the ticket, but that didn’t help since she didn’t play. Finally, he sat down and explained the game’s instructions to her.
Soon the couple will be spending more time together. The husband is looking to retire.
The winner overcame odds of 1 in 720,000 to leave two top prizes remaining in the Carolina Jackpot game.
Town and Country in Sumter received a commission of $2,000 for selling the claimed ticket.
