COLUMBIA, SC (March 9, 2023) – A Grand Strand family is splitting a $150,000 Powerball® prize three ways.
“It’s surreal,” the family member who bought the winning ticket said. “I’m the most unlucky person.”
But her luck changed on a Powerball® with PowerPlay® ticket from the Refuel at 4584 Hwy. 17 in Murrels Inlet. She admits she never plays, but the family decided to take a chance on November 5 when the jackpot was a whopping $1.6 billion. Their ticket matched all but one number drawn to take home a $150,000 prize (28, 45, 53, 56, 69 and PB: 20).
But she thought they only won $50,000, and that’s how much she told her other two family members. “We were excited about it,” she said. A friend later told her it was actually triple that amount. “We were super excited then,” she said.
The three winners waited until they could all travel to Columbia to cash in their ticket. As for the family's plans, they want to give some to charity.
“We want to spread the luck around,” she said.
The odds of winning $50,000 by matching four white ball numbers and the red Powerball® number playing Powerball® are 1 in 913,129. The odds of a 3X multiplier being selected are 1 in 3.23 when the jackpot is more than $150 million.
For selling the claimed ticket, Refuel in Murrells Inlet received a commission of $1,500.
